|Vatican||OFFICIAL SAYS JESUITS TWISTED HIS WORDS|
A Vatican official has described as 'manipulative', reporting of a statement he made suggesting the use of condoms in AIDS prevention is a 'letter evil'.|
Monsignor Jacques Suaudeau described two US Jesuits as 'manipulative' in an interview with Associated Press. He said Jesuits John Fuller and James Keenan has distorted church positions by suggesting in 'America' magazine that the Vatican has become "more tolerant" about the distribution of condoms to fight AIDS.
Suaudeau emphasised that the Vatican would not tolerate condom use, even though it was 'not indifferent' to the AIDS problem.
To demonstrate the Vatican's concern, he had given an example of condom use in Thailand that had "particularly good results for these people with regard to the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases." But he said condom use is a "lesser evil", even though it remained intolerable.
