The planned 1 October canonisation of the 120 Chinese Martyrs has caused "great pressure" to the Catholic Church in China, Church officials told Cardinal Roger Etchegaray during his recent visit to Beijing. |
Catholic leaders of the government-approved "open" Church indicated to the cardinal that the canonisation should be postponed until after normalisation of China-Holy See relations, even though the Chinese Church wants to see Chinese canonised, Church sources in Beijing told UCA News.
Cardinal Etchegaray, president of the Central Committee for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, was invited to an academic symposium last week in Beijing. He visited the headquarters of the Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Church in China and the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association on Saturday.
