Social Welfare    ARCHBISHOP SAYS CHURCH SHOULD PRACTISE WHAT IT PREACHES ON JOB CREATION
As one of the nation's largest employers, the Church has a responsibility to set an example in job creation, according to President of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference Archbishop Francis Carroll.
At the launch of a major national jobs campaign, the archbishop appealed to all employers, including his fellow bishops, to give the Centacare Employment campaign the attention it deserved.
He emphasised that job creation should become a priority in all Church agencies.
Archbishop Carroll said Centacare Employment had adopted a similar approach to a project launched last year by the Hobart Archdiocese which set out to encourage Catholic agencies in Tasmania to create 100 new jobs in a year. They had topped this target by creating 130 jobs, representing a four per cent growth in staffing of Church agencies.
