Vatican     POPE TALKS ABOUT HIS GENERATION
Pope John Paul told tens of thousands of elderly people on Sunday that the world still needs them.
"The Church still needs you, needs us," he said to the crowd of elderly from around the world gathered in St Peter's Square for their pilgrimage to mark the Catholic Church's 2000 Holy Year.
"Precisely because we are old we have a specific contribution to offer to the development of an authentic culture of life...every season of life has its specific riches that can be helpful for everyone," he said in his homily at mass.
The Pope, who is 80 and has suffered from a series of health problems, has rejected suggestions he should step down.
