Media    SYDNEY SPOKESMAN COMMENTS ON PAPAL EXORCISM
Sydney Archdiocesan spokesman Fr Brian Lucas has hosed down reports that Pope John Paul II performed an exorcism during his Wednesday General Audience in the Vatican last week.
He told The Australian newspaper's religious writer that the Church performs excorcisms on a person only after all psychiatric and psychological treatments have failed.
Zenit, an unofficial Vatican news service, gave credence to an Italian newspaper report that the official exorcist for the Diocese of Rome had confirmed than an authentic exorcism had taken place when the Holy Father attempted to drive a demon from a 19 year old Italian woman (see 'John Paul II helps possessed woman in Vatican'.
A skeptical Fr Lucas commented on the press report: "It doesn't add up".
Meanwhile, Zenit has followed up its original report by publicising a special website that has been set up to collect at least 2000 Rosary Novenas for the release of the woman from the power of the devil.
