In a forthcoming book, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has expressed his hope that Jews will embrace Christianity.
"Catholics don't want to impose Christ on the Jews, but they are waiting for the moment when Israel too says yes to Christ," said Ratzinger, quoted by the German magazine Focus weekly.
On relations with Protestant churches, Ratzinger said the goal was to unite Christianity in a single faith with Catholics taking the lead. "We as Catholics are convinced that such a single church exists in its basic form in the Catholic church," Focus quoted from the book, due to be published next month.
The reported excerpts were in line with a declaration this month by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, that questioned what it said were attempts to portray all religions as equal.
