Vatican     POPE SAYS SCIENCE PROGRESS MAGNIFICENT AND TERRIBLE
Pope John Paul, who last month condemned human embryo cloning as morally unacceptable, said on Saturday that scientific progress created wonderful possibilities but warned of its 'terrible' potential.
The Holy Father, addressing university lecturers from around the world gathered at the Vatican to celebrate the Church's Holy Year, appealed to scientists to always weigh moral acceptability and the limits of science.
"The progress of science and technology today lies in the hands of man, possibilities which are magnificent but also terrible," the Pope told the academics assembled in a Vatican auditorium.
"The knowledge of the limits of science in considering moral imperatives is not obscurantism, but safeguards research worthy of man and put in the service of life," he said.
