Olympics    KIMBERLEY BODY CALLS OLYMPIC SHOW OF UNITY
Describing laws enabling the military to be deployed during the Olympics an 'over-reaction', the Kimberley Diocesan Office of Justice, Ecology & Peace has called on Australians to forget about 'unacknowledged hurts' for the duration of the Olympic Games.
Referring to attempts to showcase injustices suffered by indigenous Australians, Office Coordinator Br Shane Wood said: "We respect the rights of those who wish to bring these matters to the attention of the international community during the Games. However, we hope and pray that any protests will be peaceful."
He added: "The recent law enabling the Australian military forces to be deployed within Australia seems to us to be an over-reaction. Let's hope that this is a last resort that never needs to be employed."
