|Vatican||CURIA OFFICIAL SAYS VATICAN 'MOTHER' STATEMENT ENCOURAGES MISSIONARIES|
Archbishop Marcello Zago, Secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Evangelisation, called the Vatican's declaration that the Catholic Church is the mother - rather than sister - of all churches, is an encouragement for missionaries. |
He said that in the statement, Dominus Iesus, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith rejects religious relativism (i.e. the modern belief that all religions are equal), while emphasising the essential role of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church in the salvation of mankind.
Archbishop Zago, who was a missionary in Laos in the 1970s, told the Vatican's Fides news agency that the growth of religious relativism in Asia as well as pressure from world religions, such as Hinduism and Islam, has led some theologians and missionaries to "question the need for evangelisation" and "water down" the contents of the Catholic faith.
"This is a mistake," he stressed.
