|Sri Lanka||CHURCH CINEMA ORGANISATION DENOUNCES BAN ON WAR FILM|
Catholic clergy and laity have denounced the ban on an internationally acclaimed film dealing with the realities of the prolonged ethnic war in Sri Lanka. |
Fr Cyril Gamini Fernando, who watched "Purahanda Kaluwara" (Full Moon Darkness) abroad told UCA News the film portrays a poor rural Sinhalese family that receives in a sealed coffin the body of a son killed in action.
According to Fr Fernando, director of OCIC, the international Catholic organization for cinema and audiovisuals in Sri Lanka, the film touches on the vanity of war, a theme that he said local cinema has not dealt with.
A government minister banned screening of the film on the grounds that it could demoralize troops fighting Tamil rebels.
