Reconciliation    AUSTRALIAN OF YEAR SAYS RACISM IS ALIVE AND WELL
Sir Gustav Nossal will tell a church-organised forum this week that despite remarkable advances in tolerance recent years, racism in Australia is 'alive and well'.
Speaking at Collingwood Town Hall in Melbourne on Wednesday, the Australian of the Year will address the topic 'Steps to Reconciliation'.
"I regret to say that, with respect to our attitudes towards Australian indigenous peoples, racism is alive and well in Australia", Sir Gustav said.
"No one ever expected the journey to be smooth, in particular as the symbolic aspects of reconciliation are more difficult for many Australians than the practical aspects" he added. "Though it is easy to be pessimistic about the reconciliation process, great strides have been taken over the last decade."
Sir Gustav is the guest speaker at the Ignatian Forum, which is sponsored by Jesuit Social Services.
