Moved by the tragedy of the Greek ferry Samina Express, which sank on Wednesday in the Aegean Sea causing at least 59 deaths, John Paul II sent a message of condolence and sorrow to the victims' families.|
In his telegram, the Holy Father implored "Theotokos," as the Greeks call the Mother of God, "to give hope to the people touched by the tragedy and to the rescuers, who have gone to help their stricken brothers with courage and generosity."
The ferry, carrying 500 people, sank after striking rocks near the port of Paros in the Cyclades islands.
