Bioethics    CARDINAL SUPPORTS IVF CONSCIENCE VOTE FOR PARLIAMENTARIANS
Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Edward Clancy, has challenged all political parties to allow a conscience vote when IVF leglislation is put to the vote in Parliament.
In a letter to the Weekend Australian, he argued that because freedom of conscience is a fundamental human right, no political party should in any circumstances require its members to vote against their consciences.
He wrote: "Acknowledging the right of a child to both a father and a mother belongs quite clearly to the domain of conscience and that is beyond question or doubt. No purely political consideration or consequence can justify the denial of that right."
The Cardinal concluded: "It wouild be to the credit of all political parties if they were at least to allow a conscience vote in the debate about the availability of IVF procedures."
