Health Care    CATHOLIC HEALTH BODY WANTS MEDICATION MANAGEMENT
Catholic Health Australia (CHA) has called for urgent action by all parties to ensure the safe and secure management of medications for the frail elderly in nursing homes and hostels, The Catholic Leader reports.
The call follows a report by the Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacists, which found potentially harmful inadequecies in medicating to elderly residents.
CHA Executive Director Francis Sullivan said the issue was a complex and difficult one, but this must not hinder the development of workable solutions to safeguard residents' health and dignity.
"However," he said, "it must be clearly understood that nursing homes and hostels are not legally responsible for the prescription or review of medications.
Mr Sullivan said the CHA welcomed the Federal Government's determination to examine the issues raised in the report and looked forward to contributing through its participation in the new Working Group of Medical and Pharmaceutical Management in Aged Care.
