CENTACARE SAYS CHURCH BEING EXCLUDED FROM WELFARE
Centacare Australia has challenged the integrity of a new report from the from the Centre of Independent Studies (CIS) in Sydney, which attacks the way Australian Churches deliver government-funded welfare services.
The Catholic Leader reports that Centacare Australia Executive Secretary Toby O'Connor said the report, called 'Playing with Fire', which was released earlier this week, added nothing to the debate on Church-state relations.
"It seems the CIS is actively seeking to exclude Churches from any involvesment in providing services to the Australian community," Mr O'Connor said.
"I feel CIS wants to replace Churches with for-profit providers whose main aim is the bottom line - more dividends to shareholders - rather than reinvest in local communities.
"As a member of the CIS we are unhappy about its methodology in reviewing the involvement of Church agencies in the delivery of social services funded by government."
Mr O'Connor said he was disappointed the centre did not consult the Churches' social service agencies before drawing 'such swweeping, ill-informed conclusions'.
