The monthly newspaper of the Canberra-Goulburn Archdiocesse, Catholic Voice, has won the Bishop Philip Kennedy Memorial Prize for Newspapers, announced at the recent Australian Catholic Press Association Conference at the Gold Coast.
The judges commended the paper for its design and reliance on its own original articles. Catholic Voice also won the award for the best
website and the best newspaper front page for the special Jubilee 2000 collage on the cover of its Christmas/New Year issue.
The award for Best News Story went to Brisbane's Catholic Leader for "Why Rome vetoed safe drug room", a comprehensive series of news reports covering the controversial and topical issue of drug injecting rooms. The judges commended the Leader for publishing the views of a range of church and community leaders, rather than simply the official church ruling on the matter.
The prize for Best Newspaper Feature went to Parramatta Diocese's 'Catholic Outlook' for an article on youth suicide.
