|USA||LOS ANGELES CARDINAL OPENS DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION WITH PRAYER|
Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles yesterday opened the Democratic National Convention in his city with an invocation, an archdiocesan spokesman said.|
The cardinal was invited to offer the prayer by Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore last week.
In 1998, the cardinal criticised candidates from across the political spectrum for engaging "in a race to see who would go the extra mile in advancing policies that undermine the sanctity of life."
Gore has been criticised recently for insensitivity to Catholics after he publicly endorsed the World Gay Pride event in Rome in July, which occurred at the same time as several major Jubilee Year 2000 events, including Pope John Paul II's meeting with fellow Poles.
Pro-life leaders criticised the cardinal's acceptance of the invitation to speak at an event connected to the unreservedly pro-abortion Democratic Party.
"Learning that Cardinal Mahony, a prince of the Catholic Church, has agreed to pray at the Democratic National Convention, sent shock waves down my spine," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League.
