John Paul II will beatify five servants of God on 3 September, including Popes Pius IX and John XXIII.
He will also confer the status of blessed on Italian Tommaso Reggio (Archbishop of Genoa and founder of the Sisters of St. Martha), Irish monk Columba Marmion (Abbot of a Belgian Benedictine Monastery and author of outstanding books on monastic and priestly spirituality), and French priest William Joseph Chaminade (founder of the Company of Mary).
After proclaiming these men and women blessed, Pope John Paul II will have beatified a total of 994 persons. Since the beginning of his pontificate almost 22 year ago, he has also canonised 323 saints. On 1 October, he will canonise a further 10 blessed.
