Italy    THEOLOGIAN SAYS IT'S OK TO SPY ON UNFAITHFUL SPOUSE
The Catholic Church would authorise a person to use the services of a detective to follow their spouse if they felt they were being unfaithful, Vatican theologian Giordano Muraro said yesterday.
Wwriting in the Italian priests' weekly Vita Pastorale, Fr Muraro said: "According to Catholic morals, it is acceptable to make enquiries into the life of one's spouse, and even call on the extreme solution of using the services of a detective."
Fr Muraro runs a pastoral centre for families in the northern Italian city of Turin.
The opportunity of getting a professional to spy on one's spouse is a subject that comes up every summer in Italy where traditionally men stay in town to work while the women head for the countryside with the children. At the start of the season, letter boxes are generally flooded with leaflets from private detectives offering their services.
Fr Muraro said: "The emotional life of the spouse belongs to both the partners. When a spouse makes enquiries into the love life of their partner, the person is looking into something which belongs to them and about which he or she has the right to know."
But he added that recourse to a detective should only be made when all other methods had failed.
