Suspected pro-Hindu groups manhandled a Catholic nun and her driver and threatened to burn the Carmelite sister inside her vehicle in Orissa, an eastern Indian state. |
UCA News reports that Teresian Carmelite Sister Kusum said in a police complaint that a mob of some 300 men armed with sticks surrounded her jeep in Bondapipilli village near Orissa state's Balliguda town on 17 August.
Shouting pro-Hindu slogans, they beat up the driver, snatched the vehicle keys and threatened to burn her with the jeep as was done to Australian missionary Graham Staines in 1999, the nun said.
A report of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar archdiocese said that the nun managed to escape and hid under a bridge overnight. A police patrol rescued her the next morning. The driver also managed return to the mission.
