Argentina    CHURCH'S 'MEA CULPA' FOR SUPPORT OF DICTATORSHIP
The Church in Argentina is preparing to apologise to the nation for its role during the military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983.
A 'mea culpa', to be pronounced by the Bishops in occasion of the Jubilee following the example of Pope John Paul II, will mark a moment in the history of Argentina. The ceremony will coincide with the first day of the National Eucharistic Meeting, set for 8-10 September in Córdoba, will be presided over by the country's 100 bishops.
In a document drawn up in April 1996, the Argentinian Bishops apologised for "not being able to stop the sufferance caused by such a great drama" and lament "the participation of sons of the Church" in the flagrant violation of human right during the military dictatorship.
According to many, the 'mea culpa' of the Church would represent a positive step towards national reconciliation.
