Sydney Archdiocesan spokesman Fr Brian Lucas has suggested that the use of drag queens at the closing ceremony of next month's Olympic Games would discredit Australia's culture and the values of the Olympic Games.|
He told the London Daily Telegraph: "Most fair-minded people would hardly think that it would reflect the values of the Olympic Games. I don't think it would reflect any credit on the true culture of the country."
Games organisers confirmed that the drag queens would be one of a number of groups depicting an extravaganza of Australian culture. As many as 50 drag queens would wear costumes featuring frill-necked lizards and fruit-laden headwear from the film Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
