|India||GOVERNMENT PROMISES PROTECTION TO CHRISTIANS|
The Indian government assured parliament last week that it is committed to protect religious minorities such as Christians from violence and sought the cooperation of all political groups. |
The assurance came a day after opposition parties charged affiliates of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian peoples' party), which leads the ruling coalition, of perpetuating attacks on minorities.
Federal Home Minister L.K. Advani told Lok Sabha (house of people), the lower house, that the government 'will be accountable' for removing the sense of 'insecurity' among religious minorities. Advani agreed that his government has incurred an image of 'being anti-minority', but added that their rule has seen fewer communal riots.
