Gunmen raided a remote Catholic mission in Angola, abducting 14 church workers and up to 20 civilians, news reports said on Wednesday.
Two priests, a nun and 11 other church workers from the Swiss mission of Our Lady of La Salette in the town of Dunde were kidnapped in the dawn raid on Tuesday, the Portuguese news agency Lusa quoted church sources as saying.
The attackers also took up to 20 children, women and elderly people whom the mission assisted, according to Lusa. Dunde is 310 miles south of the capital, Luanda.
It was not immediately clear who was responsible. The rebel group UNITA, engaged in a 25-year war with the government, often stages hit-and-run attacks, and armed bandits also roam the countryside.
