The number of pilgrims going to Confession in Rome's Basilicas doubled during the first six months of the Jubilee Year.
The statistics were released last week by officials of the Jubilee Basilicas, where the sacrament of Reconciliation has been entrusted to various religious orders and congregations.
In order to respond to the extraordinary number of penitents during the Holy Year, the schedule of Confessions has been extended, beginning at 7 a.m. and ending at 7 p.m., with a brief pause for lunch. In the Basilica of St. John Lateran, for example, there are 18 Franciscan confessors who administer the sacrament in Spanish, English, Italian, French, Portuguese, Polish, German, Croatian, and Greek.
In St Peter's Basilica, an entire wing has been set aside for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and thousands of penitents take advantage of them in order to gain the indulgence for crossing the threshold of the Holy Door.
