|Brazil||RIO CARDINAL SLAMS EXPLOITATION OF FAMOUS CHRIST STATUE|
Cardinal Eugenio Araujo Sales of Rio de Janeiro sent a letter to two advertising agencies this week requesting them to take off the air commercial TV advertisements that extensively use the image of the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue that dominates Rio's Bay of Guanabara.|
"The Cardinal has requested the agencies to take those ads off the air," said archdiocesan spokesman Antonio Passos. "If this is not done voluntarily, the archdiocese is seriously considering going to the tribunals," Passos added.
At present, two ads for beer and one for a soft drink use the image of Christ the Redeemer, combining it with women in bathing suits and insinuating attitudes.
Monsignor Estevao Bettencourt, a theological advisor for the archdiocese, said that the statue is "a symbol of the city's beauty, but the image of Christ cannot be associated with the selling of products."
