An Indonesian priest has expressed concern over the urge to gamble of many Catholics who look for lucky numbers in hymn numbers or scripture references during Sunday Mass.|
Fr Fritz Tambunan, parish priest of Medan cathedral in north Sumatra province, told UCA News: "They just want a short-cut way to get rich."
Fr Tambunan said that sermons and moral appeals are not likely to be effective in combating the illegal lottery if authorities fail to take legal actions against its operators and their backers.
Janianton Damanik, a social scientist at North Sumatra University, said that people's preoccupation with the illegal lottery indicates "a mass social deviation."
"If such condition persists," he said, "people will become permissive." It will be difficult to heal the "social ill" because people would tend to forget their values and their Christian orientation, he added.
