UK    MP BLAMES CHURCH FOR SPREAD OF AIDS
Clare Short, the Blair Government's International Development Secretary, has attacked the Catholic Church for contributing to the spread of AIDS by prohibiting condom use among the faithful.
She told BBC Radio: "The Catholic Church opposes contraception but most Catholics in the world use it. The Catholic Church is stuck and wrong on these questions but lots of Catholics ignore the Church's teaching, including good priests and nuns who are in favour of condoms being made available.
The daughter of practising Catholics, Ms Short was educated at a Catholic school in Birmingham but has clashed with the Church before over issues such as abortion and birth control.
Downing Street later emphasised that Miss Short had been speaking in a personal capacity and was not expressing Government policy towards the Catholic Church. A No 10 spokesman said: "Clare is expressing views which she has expressed in the past. Contraception has an important part to play in tackling Aids."
