In what will be one of its biggest commercial enterprises yet, the Vatican Treasury has teamed up with a rock music promoter to market specially designed goods and a Vatican credit card.
The US-based promoters intend to open more than 100 shops and kiosks around the world over the next 10 years to sell the "Vatican Treasury collection". The first shop will be located opposite St Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, and one of the first items to be market will be a Vatican Treasury credit card.
The promoters have been authorised to imprint images of Vatican art works on a range of products. The upmarket items are expected to come with a logo depicting the seal of the Treasury to guarantee their authenticity, and the final designs will be approved by senior Vatican officials.
The New York-based company, Maxx International, is planning to develop Vatican Treasury money clips, luggage leather bags, belts, wallets, hair ornaments, scarves, ties, T-shirts, caps, socks, china, glassware, teapots, salt and pepper pots, napkin rings, placemats and table cloths. In addition, there will be a Vatican Treasury Home Design Collection consisting of office, home and garden furniture, including tables, chairs, curtains, sheets, quilts, blankets, towels, wallpaper, pillows, doors, tiles, lamps, carpets, garden urns and soap dishes.
