|Vatican||PAPAL THEOLOGIAN URGES COMPASSION FOR GAYS|
In an attempt to avoid the perception of church-sponsored gay hate during the current Gay Pride event in Rome, the theologian of the papal household has highlighted a 1986 statement calling for compassion for those afflicted by the 'intrinsic disorder' of homosexuality.|
Fr Georges Cottier OP, known as the 'Pope's theologian', has reiterated the sentiment of the letter: "It is strongly deplored that homosexual persons have been, and continue to be, the object of evil expressions and violent actions."
The Gay Pride festivities, condemned by the Church and right-wing political groups, will conclude with an assembly next to the Colosseum on Saturday.
The letter, quoted by Cottier in an interview with the newspaper Avvenire, says that while homosexuality is a condition that is 'intrinsically disordered', homosexuals 'must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.'
