Bishops are considering deeper involvement in the southern Philippine refugee problem after President Joseph Estrada's 30 June deadline for negotiations with Muslim rebels lapsed with no cease-fire agreement.|
Archbishop Orlando Quevedo of Cotabato says he hopes the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines' (CBCP) will get more involved in the refugee problem on Mindanao island.
In his archdiocese alone, priests and sisters reported close to 500,000 evacuees, the CBCP president told UCA News. Mindanao bishops met at the weekend to discuss their reports to the CBCP at the conference's plenary assembly taking place today and tomorrow. Archbishop Fernando Capalla of Davao invited two southern Islamic scholars to address CBCP members yesterday.
