|USA||ARCHBISHOP OF OKLAHOMA CITY CALLS FOR MORATORIUM ON DEATH PENALTY|
Archbishop Eusebius J. Beltran of Oklahoma City in the US has called for a moratorium on the death penalty in Oklahoma, asking all Catholics in the state to join him "in rethinking this difficult issue." |
"Forgiving others, especially for brutal acts, may seem impossible in human terms," the archbishop said, but he asked the faithful -- priests, religious and lay people -- to trust that with the grace of God it could be done.
Archbishop Beltran cited Christ forgiving his oppressors on the cross and Pope John Paul II forgiving his would-be assassin as examples that "the power of forgiveness is real" and possible.
