USA    ARCHBISHOP OF OKLAHOMA CITY CALLS FOR MORATORIUM ON DEATH PENALTY
Archbishop Eusebius J. Beltran of Oklahoma City in the US has called for a moratorium on the death penalty in Oklahoma, asking all Catholics in the state to join him "in rethinking this difficult issue."
"Forgiving others, especially for brutal acts, may seem impossible in human terms," the archbishop said, but he asked the faithful -- priests, religious and lay people -- to trust that with the grace of God it could be done.
Archbishop Beltran cited Christ forgiving his oppressors on the cross and Pope John Paul II forgiving his would-be assassin as examples that "the power of forgiveness is real" and possible.
