Japan    JUBILEE 2000 CAMPAIGN CRITICISES G-8 FAILURE
The Jubilee 2000 Japan coalition says industrialised nations in the Group of Eight (G-8) have left poor nations wallowing in foreign debt.
The countries that took part in the recent G-8 summit in Japan "just turned their backs on the poor," says coalition co-chairperson Kitazawa Yoko. Kitazawa told UCA News that G-8 leaders, who met a week ago, "backtracked" on the debt-relief commitment they made at last year's summit in Germany.
"Disastrous" was the word Sr Ishikawa Haruko used to describe the Japan summit's action on the debt cancellation for poor countries that has been the goal of the worldwide Jubilee 2000 campaign. The Handmaid of the Sacred Heart of Jesus sister is on the staff of the Japanese bishops' justice and peace council.
