Vatican     PONTIFF CALLS ON US STATE TO SPARE DEATH ROW INMATE
Pope John Paul II has asked the governor of Virginia to spare the life of convicted murderer Derek Rocco Barnabei, an Italian national, the Vatican said on Tuesday.
Barnabei, 33, was convicted of raping and killing his fiance in 1994 and is due to be executed this year.
"Last December the Holy Father made contact with the governor of Virginia, via the papal nunciate in the United States, expressing his interest in the case of Derek Rocco Barnabei," the Vatican said. "Now, in the spirit of the Jubilee Year, Pope John Paul II has newly requested, again via the nunciate, the adoption of an act of clemency in the case of Barnabei."
Barnabei's mother, Jane Barnabei, was received at the Vatican last week by top Vatican official Monsignor Giovan Battista Re to ask for papal intervention on behalf of her son.
