India    SR NIRMALA'S 'EXONERATION' OF HINDU GROUPS SHOCKS CHRISTIANS
Mother Teresa's successor Sister Nirmala is reported to have 'exonerated' Hindu militant groups from accusations of anti-Christian violence.
The reports, which have dismayed many Christians, appeared in national newspapers last week. They suggest that Sr Nirmala has said that Christians are safe under Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. The papers also reported that the nun does not believe any Hindu organisation is behind the attacks on churches or missioners.
However, Sr Nirmala insists she never made such comments. "They have published all nonsense," the nun told UCA News at the weekend.
But she has refused to deny the reports, causing some Christians to believe there is substance to the reports. Some have demanded that she identify who is responsible for who is responsible for attacks on Christians if she insists the Hindy groups are not involved.
