Indonesia    NUNS EVACUATED TO PAPUA, 10 FERRY SURVIVORS RESCUED
37 nuns were among hundreds of women and children evacuated last week from Indonesia's conflict-torn Ambon by government ship.
Mary the Mediator superior Sr Damasena Malir told UCA News: "Now all nuns except their superiors have left Ambon."
Arriving in Manokwari, the nuns reported that Muslim-Christian clashes have continued to escalate and that the evacuees were fired at by snipers as they boarded the ship.
Meanwhile, Pope John Paul II, speaking before a general audience in the Vatican on Sunday, expressed grief over the sinking of the ship that was packed with Christians fleeing Muslim-Christian clashes on Halmahera Island.
