National    CATHOLIC SCHOOLS AND PARISHES BEING HIT BY GST ADMIN COSTS
Volunteers in charge of parish finances are under great pressure to become GST experts and parish cash flows will be affected under the new tax system, according to a leading national church GST authority.
"It's a stressful time for all," said Milan Bakarich, whose team of nine volunteers is currently helping parish treasurers get a grip on their new responsibilities under the GST.
And schools should set aside $10,000 for increased administration costs in the first year of the GST, according to Adelaide Catholic Education Office Coordinator of Special Projects, Mr Michael Critchley.
Mr Bakarich, finance manager of the Archdiocesan Finance and Property Office, said some parishes might even have to employ a person to look after the extra administration or several parishes might jointly fund the services of an accountant.
"Understanding the tax system is a heavy burden on our many volunteers who work for the church and it's going to impose on their time a lot more than the church has previously asked," Mr Bakarich said.
