|Vatican||HOLY YEAR PILGRIMAGE CERTIFICATES COMBINE SOUVENIR WITH CHARITY|
Holy Year pilgrims to Rome can buy certificates attesting to their participation in the jubilee while donating money to allow poorer people to make a pilgrimage, too.
The certificates of participation, which can be purchased only in person in Rome, went on sale quietly a few days before Easter, but by late May the streets around the Vatican and Rome's major basilicas were filled with young people handing out brochures advertising the parchments.
The Vatican jubilee committee's Solidarity Fund will receive about $A3.50 from the sale of each certificate.
The fund helps pilgrims from poor countries participate in the jubilee and offsets costs of the celebrations, said Cesare Macchi, director of the fund.
