Italy    EDITH STEIN IN LINE FOR CHURCH DOCTOR TITLE
Jewish-Christian martyr Edith Stein, who was designated by John Paul II co-patron saint of Europe could be declared a Doctor of the Church.
The announcement was made by Fr Abelardo Lobato, rector of the Faculty of Theology of Lugano, during an international congress "A New Feminism For a New Millennium" held last week at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome.
He said: "Edith Stein was declared a martyr and blessed, and was then canonised, and proclaimed patron saint of Europe. We are now working for her to become a Doctor of the Church".
Stein would join Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila and Thérèse of Lisieux, currently the only three doctors of the church.
