India    SIX KILLED AS CHURCH UNDER RENOVATION COLLAPSES
Five women and a child were killed and more than 35 people were injured when a Catholic church of Karwar diocese in southern India collapsed during renovation.
The 52-year-old St John the Baptist Church in Kumta collapsed last week while some 100 labourers were working to replace its tiled roof with concrete. Police and villagers worked with some 200 parishioners for more than 16 hours to rescue the workers trapped under the debris.
All the dead were Hindus, said Deacon Cyril D'Souza of the parish. Parish priest Father Paul Sequeira said engineers had certified that the walls had enough strength to support the concrete roof. Police are holding the engineers and contractors responsible for the mishap.
