The Catholic Church has purchased the historic birth site of Blessed Mary MacKillop in the inner Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy and will develop it immediately as a support, counselling and referral centre for drug users and their families.
To be known as the Mary of the Cross Centre, it will serve as a permanent memorial to Mary MacKillop's life and work amongst the distressed and dispossessed. Mary of the Cross was Mary MacKillop's religious name.
The Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr George Pell, made the announcement last week when releasing the Report and Recommendations of the Archdiocesan Drugs Task Force, which has been investigating drug abuse in Melbourne since July last year.
The Report makes 13 major recommendations, including Information and Support for Families, Rehabilitation and Education Training.
