Italy    CARDINAL MARTINI CALLS FOR PRISONS RETHINK
Prison, a place of pain and social protection in which many religious and nuns dedicate a great deal of humanitarian energy, needs to be profoundly rethought, according to Archbishop of Milan Cardinal Carlo Martini.
Drawing upon Scripture, he was calling on a group of pastors, legislators and public authorities to ask themselves whether prison does justice to human nobility.
He said: "Think of Cain, who is neither punished nor chased away, nor uprooted to be closed in an inhuman place. Guilt transforms the pain into responsibility, the penal pain does not cancel out human dignity".
He said prisons can be used, at most, for an emergency, in order to bring a halt to violence. Society must find answers to questions of the extent to which prison serves society and the defence of citizens.
