|Italy||GORE ENDORSES ANTI-JUBILEE GAY PRIDE EVENT|
Following his recent endorsement of efforts to oust the Vatican from the United Nations, US presidential hopeful Al Gore has expressed his support for a gay pride event due to take place in Rome this year.
The Vatican has strenuously requested that the City of Rome not allow World Pride 2000 to take place. Rome's city government has permitted the event to take place during the first week of July. Catholic commentators in Rome have described it as a calculated attack against the Church and an "anti-Jubilee."
Parade organiser Imma Battaglia, who was not conciliatry in her reaction to Church criticism, said: "Fuck you, the pope and all the rest, you cannot impose on our life."
Vice-president Gore signed an endorsement letter, saying he was "pleased to send greetings" to the organisers, who were "building a good and just society on the bedrock principle of opportunity".
