Vatican     UPHOLD RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN PRACTICE, VATICAN INSISTS
The Holy See has cautioned the member-states of the United Nations about a split between theoretical acceptance of religious liberty and practices that violate that principle.
Speaking for the Vatican on last week, at the 56th session of the UN's Commission on Human Rights, Msgr. Giuseppe Bertello said that religious liberty is "the most intimate right, and the very heart of human rights."
He lamented that many countries seem to accept the need for religious freedom in theory, but do not allow the practical application of that theory within their borders.
"For her part, the Church does not ask for privileges, but insists on the necessary freedom which every citizen should enjoy, to live his religious life and the contribute to the development of society," the Vatican representative said.
