|Guatemala||ANNIVERSARY OF BISHOP'S DEATH|
The Catholic church in Guatemala is commemorating the second anniversary of the murder of a leading human rights campaigner, Bishop Juan Gerardi.
He was bludgeoned to death just two days after releasing a damning report on atrocities committed by the government army during the thirty-six-year civil war with left-wing guerrillas which ended in 1996.
Five people, including three army officers, are under arrest in connection with the bishop's murder.
But a BBC correspondent in Guatemala says the military still wields considerable power in the country and progress in the case has been slow. Its correspondent says investigators believe the officers in detention come far down the chain of command and those who ordered the murder may never come to trial.
