Spain    NO NEED TO APOLOGISE FOR SUPPORT FOR FRANCO, SAYS CARDINAL
The Catholic Church in Spain has no need to apologise for the backing it gave to Franco's regime, according to the Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Antonio Marķa Rouco.
He was responding to enquiries about whether the Spanish hierarchy would repent of its record in the light of the Pope's recent apology for the past sins of the Church.
Denying any need to acknowledge fault in relation to Franco, Cardinal Rouco said that an apology would be "neither just nor opportune". On the contrary, he was keen to promote the canonisation of the many Catholics who had suffered "martyrdom" during his country's civil war of 1936-39.
