Vatican     PAPAL VISIT TO HOLY LAND INSPIRED 'ONLY BY RELIGIOUS MOTIVES'
Speaking in St Peter's Square on Sunday, Pope John Paul II emphasised that his pilgrimage, which began yesterday, 'is inspired only in religious motives', and has nothing to do with political issues.
The Pope is travelling to Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories 'with profound emotion' to visit 'the places where the Word became flesh, lived, and died and rose again for our salvation'.
On the eve of his pilgrimage, the Pope aroused further concern for his health on Sunday when he appeared with a cut on his forehead, suggesting that he had fallen in his Vatican apartments.
In the Holy Land the Pope will be accompanied by Dr Renato Buzzonetti, his personal physician, and hospitals are on alert in case the Pope suffers health problems or is the target of a terrorist attack.
