UK    SALVADORAN CHURCH OFFICIAL HOPES ROMERO WILL BE BEATIFIED SOON
A Salvadoran church official and admirer of the late Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar A. Romero has predicted that he will soon be beatified, but a Vatican official said it won't happen this year.
"We have the hope that he will be beatified in the year 2000," said Maria Julia Hernandez, director of Tutela Legal, the legal aid and human rights office of the Archdiocese of San Salvador.
"He was a martyr of the poor, a martyr of Catholic social teaching and of the magisterium. Rome is waiting to decide -- but they are going to beatify him and we don't have any doubts," she said on Monday at the Pope Paul VI memorial lecture, organized annually by the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development.
