USA    LEADING CHINESE CATHOLIC DISSIDENT DIES
The Chinese Catholic cleric Cardinal Ignatius Kung, best known for his resistance to China's attempts to control the Catholic church, has died in the United States aged 98.
As Bishop of Shanghai when the Communists came to power in China, Kung refused their demand to renounce papal authority and as a result was imprisoned for thirty years.
Allowed to travel to America for medical treatment in 1998, he settled in Connecticut where he continued to campaign on behalf of non-official Catholics in China.
