Federal Opposition leader Kim Beazley has used the example of Pope John Paul II to challenge the Prime Minister to make a formal apology to indigenous Australians.
Pope John Paul II has made an unprecedented apology for the past sins and errors of the Catholic Church against Jews, heretics, women and indigenous peoples.
Members of the Reconciliation Council, which met in Canberra over the weekend, say they have given up on any hope the Prime Minister will change his mind and apologise to the Stolen Generations.
But Mr Beazley says the Pope's apology shows the way forward for the Prime Minister.
"If the Pope can apologise for the Crusades and the Inquisition and nobody could seriously hold the Pope seriously responsible for the Crusades and the Inquistion how much easier ought it to be for us to collectively apologise to the Stolen Generation," he said.
